About Prodigal Son Records

Prodigal Son Records is a curated vinyl destination for collectors, listeners, and anyone who believes music sounds better on wax. We source records with intention — hunting for pressings that are worth owning, not just filling shelves.

Who We Are

We're independent, selective, and obsessive about quality. Every record in our catalog has been personally reviewed before it's listed — no bulk lots, no mystery bins. Whether you're after a first pressing, a rare import, or a pristine classic, you'll find records here that have been chosen for their musical and collectible merit.

How We Source

Our inventory comes from a handful of trusted channels:

  • Estate collections — curated finds from lifelong collectors
  • Private sales — direct from sellers who care about where their records go next
  • Record fairs and dealers — sourced in person, inspected on the spot
  • Targeted trades — selective exchanges with fellow collectors

We don't list everything we find. Records that don't meet our standards are passed on. What makes it onto the site has earned its place.

How We Grade

We grade both the vinyl and the sleeve independently, using the Goldmine Grading Standard — the most widely recognized system in the collector community. Every listing includes a condition grade for both components so you know exactly what you're getting.

Vinyl Grades

  • Mint (M) — Absolutely perfect. Never played, flawless in every respect. Rarely issued.
  • Near Mint (NM or M-) — Nearly perfect. May have been played once or twice. No marks, blemishes, or deterioration.
  • Very Good Plus (VG+) — Shows some signs of play but plays with minimal noise. A common grade for quality used records.
  • Very Good (VG) — Light surface marks visible under light; some audible noise during quiet passages. Still enjoyable.
  • Good (G) / Good Plus (G+) — Heavy wear; plays through but with significant noise. Suitable mainly for artwork or display.

Sleeve Grades

Sleeves are graded on the same scale but assessed for seam splits, ring wear, writing, and general integrity. A VG+ sleeve may show light ring wear or a small price sticker; NM sleeves are clean, tight, and unmarked.

If you have questions about a specific listing's condition, feel free to reach out — we're happy to provide additional photos or details before you buy.

Every record has a story. We're here to help it find its next chapter.
